Scan to CAD and BIM

  • Accuracy is limited by the capture, scan alignment, point cloud and modelling scope.
  • Survey control, absolute coordinates and certified dimensions are separate requirements and must be specified.

Matterport accuracy, in plain language

Published camera specification. Matterport’s current Pro3 technical specification lists raw depth accuracy of ±20 mm at 10 m. That describes a single camera measurement under stated conditions; it is not a blanket ±20 mm promise for every finished dimension, point cloud, CAD drawing or BIM model.

Relative accuracy is how well points and dimensions relate inside the captured model. Example: the measured distance from one wall to a nearby door. Scan spacing, overlap, alignment and the shape of the space can affect it.

Absolute accuracy is how well the model matches an external coordinate system or survey control. Example: whether a captured corner lands at the correct surveyed east, north and elevation coordinates. That requires a separately defined control and verification method; a Matterport tour alone should not be described as survey-controlled.

Matterport states that error can accumulate across aligned scans and does not guarantee the accuracy of generated MatterPak point-cloud or mesh files. For that reason, every scan-to-CAD/BIM brief must state the required use, tolerance, coordinate requirement and verification method.
